About The Aspen PCN

The Aspen Primary Care Network (PCN) first became operational in 2010, serving three communities. Since then, we have grown to include partnership between family physicians in Athabasca, Westlock, Barrhead, Swan Hills, Kinuso, High Prairie and Wabasca, Alberta. In total, the PCN has 43 participating physicians serving approximately 30,000 residents within our region.

Our priorities are to facilitate health promotion and disease prevention, and to enable successful self-management of chronic diseases and conditions.

Position Summary

The Aspen Primary Care Network is currently seeking a Mental Health Therapist (MHT) for the communities of High Prairie, Mclennan and Falher, all located in Northern Alberta. The Mental Health Therapist will work under a Physician-led Collaborative Care Model. The incumbent will work as a member of the multidisciplinary team providing evidence informed and best practices in assessment, treatment, support and follow-up to child, youth, and adult populations. This is an advanced mental health role required to perform the restricted activity of Psychosocial Interventions to address a range of mental health issues.

This is a 1.0 FTE permanent position (77.5 hrs biweekly). Hours may vary to accommodate clinics and/or physician offices and/or classes. Evenings and weekends may be required.

What You Will Do
  • Works to full scope of practice providing comprehensive care to child, youth, and adult populations
  • Provide psychosocial interventions specific to mental health and/or addictions to individuals and their families using various therapeutic approaches
  • Collaborate with outside agencies to provide the most effective care for patients and families
  • Compose regular progress reports for physicians
  • Collaborate with the patient and physician to develop and implement treatment plans
What You Need To Succeed
  • Master’s Degree in Psychology or Bachelors Degree in Social Work (with Psychosocial Intervention Authorization). Master’s in Social Work preferred. Other specialties would be considered, including specific registered counseling designations
  • Must have a minimum of 2 years recent clinical experience with child, youth, and adult populations
  • Must have excellent assessment skills
  • Must have formal clinical training and knowledge in child, youth, and adult mental health. CBT and Solution-Focused Therapy training considered an asset
  • Experience working with Child and Family Services, Health Partnership Initiatives, and school programs would be an asset
  • Demonstrated knowledge and skill in the assessment and treatment of children, youth, and adults with mental health and/or addictions concerns/diagnoses is required
  • Must have effective interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work well with a range of community stakeholders and service providers
  • Certifications in: Applied Suicide Intervention, Non-Violent Crisis Intervention would be an asset
  • Must be registered with or eligible to be registered with specific regulatory body
  • Proof of a clean criminal record check with vulnerable sector is required
  • Completion of reference checks
  • Current Registration with relevant licensing body (submitted annually)
  • Current CPR
  • Must have own vehicle and valid driver’s license
